Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS) is characterized by a large radiation dose received in a short amount of time. This condition is typically the result of a significant exposure to ionizing radiation, such as might occur in a nuclear accident or during some medical treatments. The symptoms of ARS can manifest quickly, often within hours of exposure, and depend on the dose received.

Patients with ARS may experience a range of symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and significant damage to the bone marrow, leading to decreased blood cell production. The severity of these symptoms correlates with the dose of radiation received. In contrast, other scenarios like chronic exposure or minor exposure would not lead to ARS and are typically associated with different long-term health effects rather than the immediate, severe symptoms seen with ARS.
